BRIDGE IT !! (SAMVID 14)

ROLL BACK TO SAMVID 2013
College covered – 30
Total number of group -170
Total number of participant – 7

BRIDGE IT  is an event that brings together hundreds of engineering students from varied streams to participate in a full-day celebration. Young minds are challenged to design and build a Popsicle stick bridge based upon given rules. Students submit their designed structure and then their strength are tested using standard loading machine or an equivalent.
The competition is a fun way for students to think critically, be innovative, learn to solve problems and to recognize the importance of higher education.
SELECTION CRITERIA
1. Objective type question paper (1 for each group) 15 questions. Questions will be completely logical and brain teasing. If you can really just wonder and feel the load, the way they acts on the bridge, here you are.
2. Bridge making
You have to make a bridge using Popsicle sticks, cobbler thread and adhesive.
The bridge constructed soon creatively, with maximum load bearing and lesser number of sticks may be the winner (plus OQP).
As time is sufficient with you, bridge with minimum sticks and maximum load will be the first preference.
The bridge with attractive design (look) may have bonus.
Though if there is quite significant difference in time of completion it will matter.
Sufficient time will be allowed for glue to freeze and stick properly.
Other directions will be given at the time accordingly.
Fees 200 INR/per group
Group - 2-4
Rules
Team may consist of maximum 4 and minimum 2 members.
Members may be from ANY BRANCH and ANY INSTITUTE.
Teams must bring their registration slip during event.
Team(s) may be disqualified in case of misconduct or unacceptable behavior.\
Dimensions of the bridge: length:  75cm-90cm, breadth:    10cm - 15cm,   However there
will be flexibility in   height of the bridge.
Popsicle stick(400), adhesive (fevicol), cobbler thread and paper pins could only be
used to make model provided by organizers.
No external material will be allowed to use. In case used or found using, team(s) will be
disqualified immediately.
Time limit would be 3 hours for model making and including objective question paper.
Loading- At the centre of the load bearing girder.
Models must be made within given time; no extra time will be given.
Event organizer will not be responsible in case of time clash with other event.
Any damage during construction or before evaluation, organizers will not be responsible
Decision of judges will be final and binding to all participants.
No team member will interfere in Judge’s decision.
In case of tie, models will be analyzed by judges and their decision will be final and
binding to all participants.
Rules may subjected to change according to circumstances.
Materials (to be provided)
Popsicle sticks (400)
Adhesive i.e. fevicol
Cobbler threads 1 m. in length.
Requirement common for whole would be 2 hexagonal blades, pencils, rubbers.

Things to remember (do n don'ts ) GATE 14

Things to remember (do n don'ts ) GATE 14
Instructions on Photo Identity
All the candidates appearing for GATE have to bring one of the following photo identifications in original (photo copy not permitted) to the Examination: Driving license, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, College ID, Employee identification card.

In case if any of the above is not available, one has to bring a Notarized Affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address.

Candidates expecting a spelling mistake in their name have to bring a copy of SSC Certificate and Photo ID.

Admit Card
The Admit Card can only be downloaded from the zonal GATE websites from 18th December 2013. Admit Cards will NOT be sent by post/email. Bring a print-out of the downloaded Admit Card to the Test Center along with the original and valid photo identification (NO photocopy / scanned copy/NOT expired). Candidates will NOT be permitted to take the test, if this original and valid photo identification is not presented. It may be noted that you would have specified one of the following IDs during the online application process: Driving License, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, College ID, Employee Identification Card, or a Notarized Affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address.

Precautions during downloading Admit Card
Candidates facing problem while downloading Admit Card are advised to do the following:
(1) empty cache memory of the browser
(2) close the browser
(3) re-open the browser and login at GOAPS to download your admit card.

Registration Number Format
Registration number format for GATE 2014 is two alphabet paper code followed by nine digits e.g., AG600101001.

Out of the nine digits, fifth and sixth digits put together indicate the Session Number in which a candidate's examination is scheduled. For example, if the Registration Number is ME601005112, then the fifth and sixth digits put together, i.e., 05 indicates that the candidate's examination is scheduled in Session 05. From the Session number and with the help of the table given below, a candidate can find the date and time at which her/his examination is scheduled. Thus from the table given below, examination scheduled in Session 05 takes place in the forenoon of 16th February 2014.

Session NumberDateForenoon/Afternoon
012nd February 2014Forenoon
022nd February 2014Afternoon
0315th February 2014Forenoon
0415th February 2014Afternoon
0516th February 2014Forenoon
0616th February 2014Afternoon
071st March 2014Afternoon
082nd March 2014Forenoon
092nd March 2014Afternoon
Note on Centre allotment
All the candidates were asked to give 3 choices from a specified list of cities, while filling GATE 2014 online application form. Subsequently, an option for change of city choice was also given to all the candidates (on payment basis for processing the requested change). The centre allotment was then done by an automated process following a randomized algorithm. As per this randomized procedure, centres were allotted to the candidates in the order of their original city choice or the subsequent change of city choice. It is to be noted that in this process more than 90% of candidates could be allotted cities of their 1st choice. The remaining candidates were allotted their 2nd or 3rd choice cities either because sufficient seating capacity was not available in their city of 1st choice or a particular city had to be dropped completely due to non-availability of suitable infrastructure. It is hoped that the candidates appreciate the process that was followed while handling more than 10.00 lakh candidates with the limited infrastructure available in various cities. Considering the logistics involved and the advanced stage of the examination process, GATE 2014 Committee is not in a position to entertain any requests regarding change in the GATE examination city/centre

Guidelines for Storage of Cement

IS 4082-1996 laid down the stipulation for storage of cement as follows:
The height of stack shall not be more than 10 bags to prevent the possibility of lumping up under pressure. The width of the stack shall be not more than four bags length or 3 metres. In stacks more than 8 bags high, the cement bags shall be arranged alternately length-wise and cross wise so as to tie the stacks together and minimize the danger of toppling over. Cement bags shall be stacked in a manner to facilitate their removal and use in order in which they are received.: a table showing date of receipt of cement shall be put on each stack to know the age of cement.”
In addition to the above :
Cement filled in polypropylene , jute or paper bags laid on their sides require 4.5 to 5 sq.m. per tone if laid single layer and proportionately less if laid in more than one layer.
If bags are stacked about 10 bags high, cement storage may be planned on the basis of 0.75 sq.m. per ton of cement, including 50 % extra area for clearance and path ways.
Store cement in lots of 10 ton or a normal load of a truck.

Arrangements for storage.
(a) Do not store cement in the open. Under exceptional conditions, cement can be stored on a raised damp proof floor and covered with tarpaulins on the top and sides. Ensure that rain water does not stagnate on the tarpaulin. Storage in the open should be limited to the minimum possible time i.e about 48 hours.

(b) On building contracts, lower stories and other completed portions of buildings may be used for cement storage. In such cases cement should be protected from rain that may blow in through the openings. Also protect cement from water dripping from curing or other operations in the upper floors.

© Normally store cement in weather proof sheds.

(d) The floor in the shed should be dry and raised at least 150 mm from ground level.

(e) Do not stack more than 10 to 12 bags high.

(f) If piles are more than 8 bags high, stack the bags in header-stretcher fashion.

(g) Place the bags tightly together to avoid air circulation.

(h) Allow a clear gap of 300 mm between exterior wall and cement stack.

(i) For long storage, cover piles with tarpaulin.

(j) Check the cement store / godown for any leaks before and during rains.

(k) Hydrophobic cement (IS 8043) can be stored for longer duration.

(l) Rapid hardening cement should be stored with extra care.

(m) Other type of cements should not be stored for more than a few weeks. About three months is the maximum.

(n) Illuminating inside the godown by Halogen lamps when Humidity is very high.

Receipt and Issue

a) Do not use iron hooks for lifting the bags.

b) Store different types of cement and different brands of cement separately, with proper identification marks.

c) Follow the first-in-first out principle during issue. The lot received earliest should be removed and used first.

d) See whether the cement received is cool to the touch. If it is warm do not use it before it becomes cool. (If hot cement fresh from factory is used the mix may stiffen too early.)

e) Cement stored several bags high may apparently harden (ware-house pack) . if this happens, roll the bags on a hard floor and loosen the cement.

f) If cement becomes lumpy during storage, check whether the lumps are soft enough to be crushed between thumb and fingers. If lumps are soft and breakable the cement can be used. If hard, the lumps may be removed by screening and the reclaimed cement sent for testing.

g) Do not use all the of loose cement collected from storage shed or nearby area.

How to do compaction of concrete ?

- Each layer of Fresh Concrete shall be thoroughly compacted by vibrators to the minimum practicable consolidated volume.

- The concrete to be vibrated shall be placed in position in level layers of suitable thickness not greater than the effective length of the vibrating needle. It is advisable to have concrete layer thickness not more than 600mm(in vertical members) for effective vibration.

- Vibrator needle shall be inserted vertically inside the Concrete and shall be allowed to penetrate through by its own weight. Vibration shall not be stopped when needle is immersed in Concrete.
- The vibrator shall penetrate fully into the layer being placed and also penetrate about 100 to 200 mm in the already consolidated lower layer for good bond and homogeneity between the two layers and to prevent the formation of cold joints. The vibrators shall be withdrawn slowly out of the concrete so as to allow the concrete to flow back into the hole behind the vibrator.

- The spacing of insertion shall be at intervals of about 450 mm to 700 mm depending upon the mix. The specified spacing between the inserting positions shall be maintained uniformly throughout the surface of concrete so that the concrete is uniformly vibrated.

- The spacing shall provide some overlapping of the area vibrated at each insertion. It is better to insert the vibrating head at a number of places than to leave it at one place for a long
time.

- The range of action & degree of consolidation can be recognized from the rising air bubbles & the formation of a smooth textured surface around the vibrating head.

- Vibrator needle shall be kept clear from forms at least by 100 mm. Vibrator shall be prevented from coming into contact with the reinforcement bars, embedded parts. Over vibration shall be avoided.
Compaction of concrete at junctions with hardened concrete:

-The hardened concrete surface shall be prepared by hacking or roughening & removing laitance, greasy matter & loose particles.

- The cleaned surface shall be wetted. Cement – sand grout of proportion 1:1 & of creamy consistency shall then be applied to the wet surface of old concrete. & fresh concrete vibrated against it.
